Milan Spacek

Milan Spacek, born in 1962, lives in Dielsdorf and works in Bülach. Several of his works are part of renowned collections as well as public "art‑in‑architecture" projects in the public realm.

At first glance, his unmistakable formal language seems to lie somewhere between Etruscan sculpture and Giacometti’s figures, without ever sacrificing its own independence. Spacek’s characteristic lines, the distinctive proportions of the bodies, the essence of the faces, and his self‑developed working technique draw a clear, yet never forced, boundary from existing traditions. His works radiate a calm from which viewers find it difficult to withdraw.

Milan Spacek spent his early years as an artist developing his own technique in order to realise the ideas he had for his works. Coming from painting, he first worked with classical materials such as clay, iron, stone, wood, and plaster, as well as with techniques like chiselling, welding, shaping, and casting. Combining these experiences, he initially created human figures in reinforced plaster, and soon after in reinforced cement.

By definition, his sculptures are “plastics,” as they are modelled from the inside out in more than twenty stages. No casting is involved. Each sculpture—ultimately coated and patinated several times using a method he developed himself—is a unique, one‑of‑a‑kind piece.
