Avvassena (b. 1998) is a multidisciplinary artist based in Milan (Italy). Curiosity and a propensity to listen to the surroundings give life to her unstoppable and eclectic creativity, which is expressed in artworks of multiple visual and communicative levels.
She holds a bachelor’s degree in Interior Design from Politecnico of Milan and a master’s degree in Communication Design. She has exhibited in several European cities and collaborates with international magazines, brands, and companies, with the aim to bring the message of art to everybody. Furthermore, she periodically creates artworks and installations on social themes (climate change, green innovation, breast cancer, violence against women, use of arms...) with the collaboration of researchers and non-profit organizations.
Avvassena’s artistic practice is based on the desire to go beyond the surface of society and discover the ties that weave the great net in which all are united to each other. At the heart of her research are the relationships that link our existence: the relationship with ourselves; the connection with the micro-nucleus that surrounds us; the role of each within the great human community, where the symbiosis that binds us to each other contrasts with the egocentric solitude of our times; the inevitable bond of dependence and responsibility that the individual and humanity all have towards the environment that surrounds us.
Direct interaction and dialogue with others represent the starting point of her speculations, while the donation and rebirth of their lives is the beginning of her art. Objects, traces of different lives and experiences are reinterpreted, manipulated, and then used to convey a universal and very human new meaning.
Her artistic research is inspired by the sub-Saharan ubuntu vision, according to which the individual is a created and creative part of a single great totality of human beings and Nature, where individual identity arises from an act of intersubjective and dynamic co-creation. She is convinced of the urgency of applying the ubuntu vision in the current context, and it is why she wants to transpose it into art—the most direct and involving way to reach everybody and speak to their souls.
